Description
The Portinari were members of the large Italian mercantile community in Bruges, where Tommaso managed a branch of the Medici bank from 1465 to 1478. Among the masterpieces of Northern Renaissance art, these portraits were probably commissioned upon the couple's marriage in 1470, when Maria was about fourteen and Tommaso about forty-two. Hans Memling (also spelled Memlinc; c. 1430 11 August 1494) was a German painter who moved to Flanders and worked in the tradition of Early Netherlandish painting.
